He believed Englands government had 3 branches 

1.​Legislative

2.Executive

3.Judical

~ His most famous work was “The spirit of the laws”

How did Montesquieu contribute to the enlightment?

He made people think differently about government

~His last controbution to political thought was his analysis of the system of checks and balances through separation of powers.

 

Voltaire

Died:1778

*He was the greatest figure in enlightment

​*He wrote an almost endless stream of pamphlets,novels,plays,letters,essays,and a history.

*Known for his critism in Christantity and for his strong belief in relgioius toleration,and his defense of civil liberties that included freedom of religious and free trade.

*1736, he pinned his treaties on toleration which he reminded governments that “All men are brothers under God”

How did he change philiosohy?

He changed peoples thoughts on freedom of religion, culture, freedom of spirit, justice, humanity

 

Diderot

Died:1784

*Enlightment writer, historian, philosher

*He was French

*Known for his wit , his attacks on the established Catholic church,Christantity as a whole and his advocacy of freedom of religion, speech and separation of church and state.Serving as Co-founder,cheif editor, and contributor to the Encyclopedie along with jean le Rond D’Alembert that put emphasis on Enlightment political theories

*He thought the universe was like a clock, God was the clockmaker and he allowed it to run without his interference according to his own natural laws.

How did Diderot change philiosphy?

He didnt think God played a part in everyday life, he was against the Cathloic church.
